Where are we now?
BRUFC, formed in 1902, currently fields three senior sides.
The 1st team compete in Yorkshire Division 2, which is a highly competitive league. In their first season back in Yorkshire 2, following promotion in 2009, the team finished 12th and are now looking to build on their recent successes.
The Development Squad (2nd team) compete in the Merit leagues and have enjoyed some notable victories. Their captain Richard (Fred) Perry is a strong believer in enjoying rugby, there’s never a dull moment. John Hinchcliffe has guided the Griffins (3rd team) to their best season for some years and is now looking to strengthen his squad with players who just fancy a run out on a Saturday.
The senior section is complimented with a high quality junior section that fields a number of excellent boys teams. These sides are supported by qualified coaches at Under 13s, 14s, 16s, 17s, and a there is also successful Under 15’s Girls Team. Next season we will also have an U 18's girls team.
What is on the horizon?
The coaching team led by Mark Smith have recruited a “gem” in Player Coach Ed Norris. The 30-year-old has spent the last nine seasons in the second and third tiers of English rugby with the likes of Doncaster Knights, Sedgley Park and Manchester. Ed will fit into the coaching team as Forwards Coach but will be assisting with other sessions as well as playing alongside the wealth of talent already at the club.
The club is, however, still on the lookout for new players who are interested in playing at any level. Whether a potential first team recruit or an occasional 3rd teamer.
The junior section is aiming to set up a new under 13s team, that will allow a new crop of players to develop and travel through the superb Junior Section ladder!
At the other end of the Junior Scale is the return of the Colts Team where the 2009/10 under 17s will be moving up into the Under 19s category with the return of a few of last years colts
One of the success stories is the accomplishment of girl’s rugby at BRUFC. A great bunch of girls have played for the club and 7 have represented Yorkshire! We now move up an age group to Under 18’s but the club is still aiming to field an Under 15’s which will be a fantastic achievement.
The future is bright at Barnsley RUFC and the club welcomes Players, Supporters, Family and Friends to come to Shaw Lane and help take Barnsley Rugby Union Football Club Forward!
